About the Society
The Society of College Scholars offers bright and motivated undergraduates the opportunity to participate in an honors program that includes intensive interaction with faculty and like-minded students. The program includes seminars and small General Education Group-Satisfying courses during the first two years at the university. Upper division students enjoy access to subsidized internships and can work with faculty on research projects leading to graduation with honors.
The Society aims to attract and challenge academically strong and inquisitive students and to promote the core values of a liberal arts education: curiosity and critical reasoning about the world and the self, written, oral, and artistic expression, and ethical and moral judgment.
In brief, the Society offers a progression of opportunities:
- Small classes, typically 25 to 30 students, for first and second year
students.
- Access to a paid internship program in the Junior year.
Some students have taken their internship on campus and worked with
UOregon faculty. Others have taken their internships overseas and around the
world. Still others have elected to take their internships in the
commercial/industrial environment.
- The internship should lead into participation in a Departmental Honors program
and the completion of a Senior thesis concluding with graduation with Honors.
Membership in the Society is by invitation and is based on the student's academic record. Students who have not received an invitation, but who feel they could benefit from the Society's programs should contact us.
