Admissions to the Society
Entering Freshmen typically receive an invitation to join the Scholars;
the invitation is based on high school GPA and performance on standardized
examinations such as the SATs and AP. Admission to the program is not
complete until you have submitted the registration form. This form
must be submitted by 15 May 2009. Students who would like to be considered
but who did not receive an invitation as an incoming freshman may petition
for admission by sending an email to collegescholars@cas.uoregon.edu.
Students also accepted to the Clark Honors College may also enroll in the
Society of College Scholars program and may take College Scholars courses,
but will be required to fulfill General Education requirements as specified
by the Honors College.
Additionally, current UO students and entering or transfer students
demonstrating strong academic records and motivation may apply for
admission at any time prior to the end of their freshmen year.
Scholarships
The Society offers $3000 scholarships to encourage top students to enter
UO and participate in the SCS program. These “James & Shirley Rippey Fellows”
receive $1500 for each of your first two years at UO. Awards are based on
merit and need, with a modest preference for Oregon residents. Applicants must
have a FAFSA on file with the University of Oregon (for more information please
visit Office of Student Financial Aid
& Scholarships).
To apply, please send email the SCS director at
director-scs@cas.uoregon.edu with a statement of no more than 250
words that explains your academic goals and how the program of the Society
of College Scholars will facilitate your progress toward those goals.
The deadline to apply for 2009-10 Scholarships is 10 March
2009. Recipients will be notified by 10 April
2009. As scholarships are awarded in accordance with
Federal guidelines, we are unable to be flexible on these deadlines or make
exceptions.
Payments are made in November of each year, are contingent on continued
participation in the Society, and are offered on top of any other need or merit
based aid you might receive.
Internships
The society also gives $300 grants to juniors who pursue unpaid internships or research practica with UO faculty. The pdf application form is here and is due by the last day of the 5th week of the quarter for which you are enrolled for internship/practica credits.
