Student Profiles

Alison

Hello! My name is Alison and I am from the Bay Area. I went to Notre Dame High School, a tiny all-girls Catholic school in downtown San Jose. I chose the University of Oregon because it had the Allied Architecture and Arts School within a greater liberal arts university. This meant that I was not limited to just taking art classes but I could also attend classes in other disciplines.

I chose the Scholars program because it is a flexible Honors program that lets me be a Digital Arts major, study abroad, and participate in extracurricular activities. By far, my favorite part of the program is the colloquia because as a small group, we are able to discuss issues, take field trips, and have pizza parties.

One of the main reasons why I went to college was to study abroad. I just knew that I wanted to go somewhere in Western Europe. I went to the Office of International Programs and looked into what they had to offer. At first, I wanted to study in Spain but I chose London, England instead because of the internship option and the art history classes. For my internship, I work at Pall Mall Printers and Stationers, a lovely little store in the Royal Opera Arcade. For this internship, my main tasks will be creating a website and catalog for the store. I will also be in charge of doing the window displays, running the store, and helping customers. Through these two terms, I will be learning about how to apply my digital arts skills and how to run a business.

Brian Willis, Mathematics. From Corvallis Oregon

"I particularly enjoy the luxury of having two professors, one from history and the other from physics, collaborating in one course to offer students truly distinctive insights. It is most challenging when the two disagree, and we have to come up a synthesis."

Kendell Tylee, Economics. From Seattle Washington

"The courses devised for the Scholars are unique, not just small versions of large classes, but courses that try to connect university scholarship to the 'real' world."
